Questions You Should Be Asking Your Photographer

There are a lot of photographers out there! How do you know which one to choose? How do you narrow down which questions to ask to ensure they are a right fit for your photography needs?

As a family photographer I get asked a million questions - I don't mind the questions either because this gives me a good sense of understanding into the market and how to advertise my business in a proactive way. Here I want to cover 3 good questions you should be asking your photographer before booking them!

First let’s explore alllll the wrong questions I get asked as a photographer:

”How many photos will we get?”

”What’s your editing style?”

”Do we get prints?”

”Have you worked at this location before?”

And I can’t blame you – planning a photography session is exhausting, sometimes a little scary, and something you’ve probably never done before! Over 75% of questions generally are centered around the delivery of your gallery images.

And I can’t blame you – planning a photography session is exhausting, sometimes a little scary, and something you’ve probably never done before! Over 75% of questions generally are centered around the delivery of your gallery images. My advice is to review the photographer's website I can almost guarantee those questions can be found on their investment pages. This blog is here to help you get more clarity on which questions will benefit you to select the correct photographer for your photo session!

What does your post-session workflow look like?

What is the process you are taking to ensure our images will be delivered within the delivery timeline.

This question not only will make me (and many others smile) it will give you a solidify timeline of when to expect your images. But most importantly how we handle every detail after you session. Take key notes when photographers mention, how they process photos from their sds cards (backup cards), how they take action to your files once your gallery link is shared, how long after your session they back-up or keep your images just in case!

What happens if you get sick?

I can count on one hand how many times I have been asked this question. And this is very important to know! Personally, I have never missed a photography session. BUT I also have always had a plan just in case. The amazing part of being in the photography community I have learned to network and luckily gain amazing professional friendships that I can rely on in any emergency!

Hot questions to ask about this subject are:

  • Will I as a client get to approve any replacement photographers in case the photographer is unable to work?
  • Am I subject to any refunds or credits in the event your photographer doesn’t make it?

What advice do you have for me about ___________

This is a great open-minded question! What is it that you are most concerned about, children participation? outfits? time of session and naps that day? There are many variety of ways to ask a question related to you

Think about something that is more focused on making your experience soothing and ways enhance it. Some examples of questions I have been asked related to this question: What advice do you have for undergarments. Do you have any recommendations for makeup artists? What are ways to get my husband on board for the session.

Again these questions will help make a clear decision on which photographer can help you throughout this process. They also open the door for further communication with your photographer and build a relationship prior to your session.
