5 tips to prepare for a photo shoot

It’s very easy for parents to be on edge, anxious, and nervous by the thought of doing family photos with young children. Children, of all ages, aren’t always easy to direct and are unpredictable. Children’s attention spans are short - they lose interest quick and often times car rides make the kids tired and ready for bed. I understand the intimation many families feel with the thought of trying to get their kids to do something they don’t necessarily want to do. Even on a good day this task isn’t the easiest. However, I have photographed many families and children of all ages and have found tips for every child. Having the right approach and mindset makes a huge difference when prepping children for photos. The best photos showcase children in their natural state, here are my top 5 tips to make every session easier for you!

Tip 1: Be Prepared

Number one tip I can share is to plan nap and mealtimes to take place prior to the session. Almost all outdoor sessions occur an hour before sunset. Planning nap times outside of the session time is best. When children are well-rested their moods are always in a good state. Bring light snacks, and plenty of water for the family. Other items to pack are any comfort object for child, this will help keep them entertained during breaks. Lastly, having extra clothes on hand in case of spill or accidents.

Tip 2: Be Patient and Flexible

Children can be unpredictable, so be patient and go with the flow. Following this tip will allow them to take breaks when needed and be open to capturing spontaneous moments. The best photos of children are when we least expect it! Let them act their age - my rule is kids run the show!

Tip 3: Make It Fun

The best way to not over stimulate your kids is to make this session FUN! Don’t make it a big deal. Let them know they are going to have fun taking photos, rather than making any punishments if they don’t smile. If you are stressed or in a bad mood children will pick up from that. Stay calm, open minded and make some compromises to keep the peace. If you are offering a bride, such as candy ice cream or a playdate, please let me know so I can play along! I do focus on natural smiles so I will be making some silly noises and doing the bunny hops to get happier reactions.

Tip4: Encourage & Interact

I encourage and want all my parents to interact with their children. But this I mean playing tickle battles, giving extra kisses etc. I will spend the whole session interacting with the children to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. I play games, tell jokes, and ask them about their favorite things. This will help bring out their natural expressions and create authentic photos. If they have a favorite song, toy or interest to get their attention don’t be afraid to bring it to the session. This will make the photo shoot more enjoyable for them.

Tip 5: Wait to dress

Most important tip! Don’t slip into that dress, shirt or pressed pants just yet! For babies and toddlers, I recommend waiting until the last minute or upon arrival. For older kids, as long as they aren’t eating or drinking on the way, they should be fine. Also be sure to have extra clothes on hand in case of spill or accidents. I am all for children getting dirty and being themselves.

Remember, the key is to create a fun and positive environment that allows the children to be themselves. With these tips, you can make the photo shoot with children a successful and enjoyable experience.
